Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions and Awards

Canoe Trail have been an Approved Activity Provider (AAP) nestled on the River Great Ouse in Bedfordshire for well over a decade. Our dedicated outdoor centre, Kempston Outdoor Centre, and Matchstick Wood, private riverside woodland on the banks of the river offer a perfect training or assessment location for your expedition. We also have a dedicated white water training facility at Bedford where we can simulate white water and rapids.

Duke of Edinburgh Open and School Expeditions

From our base at Kempston Outdoor Centre we travel further afield to many iconic river and lake locations around the UK or overseas to make your DofE experienced and expedition truly memorable. Directors Ash and Rich have completed over 15,000 miles of human powered expeditions and wrote the UK guidebook, Great British Paddling Adventures endorsed by Ran Fiennes, Steve Backshall and Ray Mears. Local rivers we use for the training or qualifying (assessment ) expedition include the River Nene in Northampton or River Thames. Further afield we use lots of beautiful locations including: the Great Glen Canoe Trail, River Spey, River Tay, River Tweed (Highlands), River Severn and River Wye (Wales), River Trent, River Ure and
Ouse (England).

Canoe Trail has huge fleet of over 300 canoes, kayaks and SUP's as well as accessories and equipment including tents, waterproofs, stoves, dry suits and more. Our professional instructors will provide structured training including camp craft, navigation, first aid, and safety and rescue for paddling. On booking your DofE choose between the training or qualifying options or the bundled deal for both saving monies.

Book Your Duke of Edinburgh School or Open Expedition

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has been running for 60 years with almost 2.6 million participants achieving an award. If you think your child’s school might be interested, please give us or them a shout.

Over the years Co-Director Richard has presented the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards at St James Palace to lots of deserving recipients and this award scheme is a great fit with our company values.

Our approach is to teach a mix of skills to meet the award requirements but also ensure participants are inspired to progress their technical skills and personal adventures. We provide expert tuition to prepare young people for the expedition and journey ahead.

Training and Qualifying D of E Expeditions

Training and Practice D of E expeditions

We use our own private campsites and venues for the training expeditions locally in Bedfordshire, with our own Kempston Outdoor Centre based on the River Great Ouse, our private woodland on the river downstream (both can be used for walking as well) and our farm site in North Bedfordshire / Cambridgeshire border with a second private woodland.

Our riverside woodland offers a stunning rural location that was voted Top 52 Things to do in the World by Lonely Planet and Top 3 UK destinations by Red Bull Magazine.

These venues are perfect for training and learning the ropes with professional instructors to support structured learning.

Qualifying Expeditions (Assessed D of E)

After the training phase and usually time for some consolidation participants then complete their assessed D of E expedition with assessors supporting their activity but a bit more hands off. Our manta of safe, fun, learn means it is a memorable experience for young people building resilience in the outdoors, life skills, whilst completing paddling and walking journeys.

Just returned from a week in Scotland with Canoe Trail. It was one of the best organised trips I have done. The team were awesome, great instruction with loads of patience for those new to paddling.
