Our Origins & Story

Canoe Trail was founded in 2005 by Richard and Ashley, a husband and wife team. The award-winning business is based at Kempston Outdoor Centre in Bedford. It offers a range of adventures and activities including canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard hire, paddlesport lessons, woodland camping, and paddlesport expeditions. Find out more below.

Adventures Around the World!

Company founder Richard Matheson Harpham FRGS is a human-powered adventurer who alongside Ashley has undertaken many worldwide adventures. You can watch the video to sample some of their exploits to Cananda

At Canoe Trail we have an adventurous and competitive DNA with team members completing big canoe and kayak races including the infamous Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race (125 miles and 77 portages of pain time), the Muskoka River X race (80miles of Canadian lakes, rivers and wilderness) and the Yukon River Quest – “The YRQ” (444 miles and the world’s longest annual canoe and kayak race).

People come to us for canoe and kayak coaching and tuition because we are friendly, break it down into simple steps, offer progression from basic paddling to expert level, and have some great kit. Our current instructors:
Ashley Kenlock Canoe Trail CEO

Ashley Kenlock

Ash is the CEO of Canoe Trail and has 20 years of paddling experience.

Ash runs Canoe Trail with her husband Richard. Ash is a qualified Level 2 coach UKCC and is also a qualified SUP coach. She is a natural paddler and learned to roll in 10 minutes in the pool. She has a Masters in human and equine biology and is a keen horse rider and instructor used to train the Queen’s horses.

Ash loves wild swimming and previously surfing. Since learning to paddle Ash has paddled some iconic Rivers and Lochs including Loch Ness, River Wye, Norfolk Broads, and a number of Scottish Rivers. Ash has also led expeditions in Canada in Ontario.

She is a very experienced canoe and expedition leader having covered hundreds of miles. Ash and Rich regularly write for Paddler and Bushcraft and Survival Magazine and have completed their book called Great British Paddling Adventures which is pubslished by Bloomsbury and available directly or through Amazon.

Richard Harpham

Company founder, Richard is a Director, coach and British Canoeing tutor at Canoe Trail.

Rich is an experienced adventurer, kayak, SUP and canoe coach. Richard has completed human powered adventures all over the world. Richard regularly writes for magazines including Outdoor Adventure Guide, Paddler Magazine and BAMLife. As an Inspirational Speaker Rich has delivered motivational talks to a wide range of audiences, from Corporate Team Building Events, to National Shows and Events and community grouops.

Rich is an moderate water endorsed coach, advanced canoe leader, sea kayak leader, Guide and a tutor for British Canoeing offering PSI, touring leader, open water SUP leader, PSL and PSRC (FSRT).

Ash and Rich regularly write for Paddler and Bushcraft and Survival Magazine where Rich was the former editor. They have completed their book called Great British Paddling Adventures which is pubslished by Bloomsbury and available directly or through Amazon. Rich was the manager of the Ghana Ski Team at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Calum Steel

Calum Steel

Calum is a White Water Kayak Leader, Advanced Canoe Leader, Expedition Leader with 14 Years of Experience in the Outdoors.

Scottish born and bred! Our Centre Manager has years of experience across watersports, outdoor activities and snow sports. He has led many canoe and kayak expeditions across Scotland and further afield including Africa and Europe. Basically he has paddled all over the world. He is ISIA / BASI Level 3 Ski & Snowboard instructor and former Commonwealth Games and Team GB athlete.

Calum is a Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) tutor offering PSRC, Touring Leader and Paddle Sports Leader. He can also provide the Personal Paddling Awards and other qualifications.

Calum is a moderate water endorsed coach and advanced canoe leader.  Calum previously ran Neilson Active Holidays in Sivota, Greece.

Alex Bonney

Alex Bonney

Alex Studied his Level 5 Higher Education in Sport at Shuttleworth and has spent the last few years paddling lots of white water in canoe and kayak. Alex is completing his core coach and touring leader qualifications and has completed his white water safety and rescue BC course

Alex has been paddling since he was 14 and rarely ever finished a session dry, avid white water paddler with some SUP sprinkled in. Alex has been promoted internally from outdoor instructor to team leader and is now an assistant manager.

His preferred trips have been trips to Scotland, North Wales, and now sea kayaking. Alex completed a Level 5 Outdoor Education qualification at Shuttleworth College and has subsequently embarked on a Level 5 apprenticeship with Canoe Trail completing more NGB qualifications.

Alex has completed lots of expeditions on rivers around the UK and has completed his white water leader training. He is a qualified Archery GB instructor is finalising his Diploma in Education and Training.

Arafat Walugembe

Arafat has worked in the business for as long as we can remember!
Alongside completing his degree at university, he is a key member of the team and is a qualified Paddlesport Instructor. The SUP king! Arafat is completing his touring leader and core coach qualifications with many years coaching and paddling experience
Sib Eames

Sib Eames

Paddling for around 12 years recreationally, Sib has spent the last 7 years coaching and encouraging the next generation of paddlesports enthusiasts through the Sea Cadets.

The need for adventure bought Sib to Canoe Trail originally as a customer. Now a whole new adventure has begun! Sib is a SUP, Canoe and kayak coach, as well as our resident first aid trainer and assessor. Sib runs our Outdoor Rec First Aid (16 hour) course with a broad experience of practical first aid qualifications.

Sib has run expeditions on the Great Ouse, Derwent and Stour. Sib is completing her canoe leader and climbing wall instructor qualifications and has completed her white water safey and rescue qualifications.

Sib is a qualified Archery GB instructor and is one of our Assistant Managers

"Bushcraft" Bob Collins

"Bushcraft" Bob Collins

"Bushcraft"Bob Collins is a qualified paddlesport instructor with years of experience on the water. He is a master of carving, weaving and bushcraft skills creating masterpieces and sharing a passion for the outdoors and nature
Bob is also a fantastic archer, ice hockey player and skater. He creates intricate carvings and willow baskets and also sells his craftwork on his etsy site

Nathaniel Barker

Nathanial first joined Canoe Trail as an assistant instructor and has progressed over a number of years and promoted to Team Leader.

Nathanial is a qualifed outdoor instructor with a passion for white water kayaking and canoeing often joining Alex on paddling trips.A former Scout Nathanial has completed expeditions around the UK and also in the Canadian Wilderness.

Nathanial has completed his core coach training and completed a Level 3 Diploma at Shuttleworth College

Kyle Moriaty

Kyle Moriarty is an experienced outdoorsman who has a passion for expeditions, coaching and sharing skills. He is a qualified Lowland Leader and has a paddlesports instructor. He has completed his Climbing Wall Instructor training and is a qualified Archery GB instructor.

Kyle is completing his Level 3 apprenticeship in outdoor activities and attended Shuttleworth College where he studies Level 3 extended Diploma. 

Jules MacKillop

Jules joined the Canoe Trail team to bring joy to all of our work lives. Known as the Office Queen Jules has a laugh that is infectious and spreads fun throughout the team. Jules previously worked in education at prestigious schools as well as in hospitality in motor racing.

Jules comes from farming stock growing up on a North Bedfordshire farm and is at home in the great outdoors.

David Sawyer

David is one of Canoe Trail's Team Leaders with a wealth of experience in the outdoor industry. David is another qualified first aid trainer and volunteers as a scout leader locally.

David holds a raft of qualifications including completing his Archery GB instructor award, Paddle Sports Instructor, Core Coach Training and  IOL Bushcraft workshops. David has completed various expeditions around the UK and completed his Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions through Canoe Trail.

David is completing his Level Apprenticeship with Canoe Trail his Diploma in Education and Training. 

Matt Hopkins

Matt Hopkins is a former surf instructor and life long kayaker. Matt joined the team as a customer and volunteer instructor and migrated into the staff team when one day he simply never left. Matt is a master baker aka "The Unlikely Baker" and runs our new 'Canoe and Brew' horsebox cafe.

Matt is a qualified Paddle Sports Instructor (PSI) and has lots of experience leading and supporting white water expeditions and trips.  Matt is one of the Canoe Trail Assistant Managers and is the marketing lead for social media and promotion.

Aimee Martin

Aimee has worked at Canoe Trail for a number of years bringing her experience as a Scout Leader to the team. Aimee completed her level 3 outdoor education course at Shuttleworth and has become an accomplished instructor.

Aimee holds a range qualification and is a paddle sports instructor.

Zach Bonney

We are a family business and Zach and his brother Alex are both part of the team. Zach has completed his Duke of Edinburgh Award. 


Zach is a Paddle Sports Instructor with experience of paddling a wide range of waters and conditions. He loves paddling kayaks joining Alex in Wales and other locations.

Gemma Burridge

Gemma is another customer turned professional instructor who has paddled with Canoe Trail for almost a decade.

Gemma is a local guide leader and enjoys bushcraft and paddling around the UK. Gemma is a paddle sports instructor PSI and previously worked as a nanny and chalet host. Gemma works as a teaching assistant in a local school.
