Trip Itinerary

Start Time: 10am from Kempston Outdoor Centre

Finish Time: 3pm from Kempston Outdoor Centre

Join us for the unique Adventure Weekend run by Canoe Trail: a multi-award-winning family-run business. You will join the team of professional instructors and journey to our private riverside woodland; voted Top 52 Things to do in the world by Lonely Planet. Along the way you will enjoy some of England’s best rural countryside with Otters, kingfishers, and Herons; as well as Bedford’s iconic Victorian Embankment. We will practice traditional canoe skills with portaging, navigating locks and some poling.

Once at the woodland we enter the tranquil and magical world of Matchstick wood with badgers, owls, and deer; and enjoy a wild camp amongst the trees. The woodland has stunning and discreet clearings, letting you pitch your tent or string your hammock in plenty of space to enjoy an evening under the canopy, including a gourmet woodland meal: all locally sourced and free range. We will be sharing adventure and bushcraft skills; with fire lighting skills, shelter building, tracking and more. Wild swimming is available for those who want to freshen up.

In the morning, after a hearty breakfast over the open fire, we will tackle some team challenges with more bushcraft activities. We will head back to the river and shoot the weir at Willington (conditions permitting); enjoying some white water canoeing. Onwards along more winding backwaters to the historic riverside village of Great Barford.

This is the perfect family trip to enjoy professional coaching and instruction in paddling and simple bushcraft on one of Britain’s longest and most beautiful rivers.
