Route Description
This trip is timed to make the most of the morning or afternoon sunshine and is set on a quiet part of the river. This is the perfect trip for those who have paddled our Bedford routes or those wishing to have a little paddle on this smaller section of the River Great Ouse. This is an out-and-back route with this section of the river requiring a little bit of effort to get back to the start point so ideal for adults and fit families. We provide a simple and easy-to-read map and a waterproof dry bag for your belongings. Highly popular among friends, couples, families, and groups. Choose from kayaks, SUP's or canoes or a random selection for a great family day out on the river.
At Kempston Outdoor Centre, you set off from a slipway alongside a riverside path that goes all the way into Bedford. You are free to paddle and explore up or downstream. In the Summer, the water is shallow at points with gravel beds and thick reed beds full of wildlife. This is a great place to spot a Kingfisher (listen out for a ‘peep’ noise, followed by a blur of electric blue as it flies on ahead of you). You will be paddling through the beautiful countryside and towards Bedford is a series of small islands where you can pass either side. On the right-hand side is more parkland adjacent to the river.
